Mental Golf Tips - "The Power of Possibility"
When developing the field of golf psychology, one thing constantly amazes me. It is the power of our imagination. I’ve been coaching for 13 years now and love how ALL OF US can use the simplest of all mental golf tips - the Power of Possibility. This is not positive thinking by the way. By saying to yourself “I’m going to hit it there” when you feel you have no chance of doing that, you are playing the role of a boss who expects way too much – simply increasing stress and self-doubt. What I’m talking about is learning to work with our own adventurous spirits. I’ve not met anyone who doesn’t love a challenge.
Well I have a challenge for you! I want you to see if you have
got the imagination to really IMAGINE what the following situations would FEEL like. Now, you might not be able to imagine any of these situations happening every game, BUT what if you could? Your challenge is to immerse yourself fully into each of these possibilities, and if you can, notice what they would be like. Be warned, none of them are probable, but they are all possible. Don’t simply read down the list, take a few seconds enjoy the feeling of each possibility.
So what would it feel like to...
- Make a beautiful flowing swing on your first drive and then get even
better with each shot? - Play the mental golf of your hero golfer for each of those 18 holes?
- Play like your all time hero golfer for 18 holes?
- Execute your intention with every shot?
- Be conscious of where the clubhead is pointing when you strike every
shot? - Take 18 putts in a round?
- Hole every chip?
- Hole every pitch shot?
- Birdie every hole?
- Effortlessly strike LONG drives down the centre of the fairway?
- Crisply strike every iron shot to the stick?
- Have a full flowing easy swing when splashing out of bunkers?
- Knock in every 6 footer as easily as a one footer?
- Play every shot by simply rotating your centre?
- Confidently hold a single picture of your target for every shot?
- Learn and move on from any mistakes to confidently focus on your
next shot? - Always commit 100% to the exact shot to play BEFORE stepping up to play it?
- Allow any nervous energy to energise your focusing power?
- Focus only on your own game?
- Be in the present moment for 18 holes?
- Give every shot everything?
- Extend your feel so much that your body, club, ball and target all connected?
- Allow yourself to really love every moment of every shot you play?
- Have left doubt behind in the clubhouse?
- No longer feel embarrased or frustrated?
- Trust your body to do a great swing whilst you focus only on the target?
- Play better with each round you play?
- Master your own golf psychology?
- Always consider the possible from now on?
Your body relies on your golf psychology for instruction. Considering possibilities doesn’t mean that they will each happen. This kind of golf psychology gives your body a clear intention of where you want your game to go, instructing your body to access previously hidden resources. Now I wouldn’t suggest to you to have a read of this list before you go out and play your next round…but what if you did?
