Mental Golf Tips – One Minute Single Minded Golf
A 100W light bulb will light a room. Align the same 100W (no more energy required) in a single direction, you have a laser that will cut through inch thick steel. Accurate shots require accurate golf psychology. All my mental golf tips aim to give you the 2 things you need to play in the “zone” of great golf psychology:
- A single image of your shot going to a very specific target, combined with
- A congruent feeling of connection with the target so that you know that the pictured shot will happen
I developed the Single Minded Golf Academy from this single “see it/feel it” moment of being fully ready. Although it is simple, consistently recreating this single image+feeling combo takes commitment. It can be very tempting let other thoughts and emotions come in - like the trees, the water, the bunker, the wind, your opponent, your score…leading to doubt and ultimately poor shots.
It requires you to change your attitude of what’s important away from the score towards your ability to be present - to see and feel the shot before, during and after every shot. Single minded means ONLY having the single image+feeling in your mind and NOTHING ELSE. Silencing your mind to hold a single focus for a period of time is the basis of meditation - hence the use of meditation by most top tour pros.
If on the course you are able to hold just this image+feeling of each shot for just 10 seconds whilst you play the shot, it will lower your handicap. If you are able to do it for a whole minute, it will transform your routine to create an unbendable laser, firing your ball to it’s target.
A simple way to develop your mental golf is to practise meditating now:
- Picture the toughest shot you can imagine on your golf course
- Imagine being there now standing over the shot about to play it
- Pick a specific target to aim at
- See and feel the shot going to that target over and over again for 1 minute – if other thoughts come in, just refocus on the target
- Finally test the shot in your mind – when you see it now, how is it different? More laser like? More single minded?
This was just a minute – one minute to focus. The more you practise this technique BEFORE you play, the more laser like your focus will be when you’re under pressure.
